Color-cation

Thank you to the lovely people over at
STIR Magazine at Sherwin Williams for this little tidbit of info. It is a pet peeve of mine when people misuse words. Especially in design! Educate the masses! Knowledge is power! Soak it up my friends:

The 5 Most Commonly MisusedColor Terms
A quick guide to five common color terms your clients may not fully understand.
Color terminology helps designers and decorators accurately share their vision with clients before it comes into existence. But even the most basic terms are often misunderstood by clients and even by some designers. Words that have a very specific meaning in color theory can have much broader, more nebulous meaning in the average person’s mind. So being sure your client understands what you mean when you’re describing a color scheme can be a tricky proposition.

Here’s a handy glossary defining five of the most common — and most commonly misused — color terms: tint, shade, tone, value and saturation.

Tint. Put simply, a tint is a lighter variation of a color. Tints are created by adding white to colors. For example, pink is a tint of red. A commonly held meaning of this word is to add color to something (blue-tinted hair), so it’s important to be clear with clients that the color-theory meaning is quite different.

Shade. A color made darker by adding black to it. Navy is a shade of blue. This word is routinely used to describe any variation of color, even much lighter ones — take for example the 1960s song "A Whiter Shade of Pale" — so some clients may not understand that shades are darker than the base color.

Tone. If gray is added to a color, a tone of that color is created. Tones are generally more muted versions of colors. Clients sometimes refer to grayer versions of colors as "tints" or "shades," a distinction not widely known outside the art and design communities.

Value. This term describes the lightness or darkness of a color. Colors with more white (tints) have higher value, and darker colors (shades) have lower value. It’s a very helpful term when describing the possibilities of color, but you’ll want to explain it clearly to clients.

Saturation. The purity or intensity of a color is called saturation. The most-saturated colors are vivid and strong, where less-saturated colors can appear washed out or muted. Gray has zero saturation. The quality of light can affect saturation; for example, a painted wall’s color can appear more saturated during the day and less so as the light fades, and different types of artificial light can enhance or diminish saturation.

Murder Mystery Downtown

Recently, I participated in a night of drama and mystery in honor of Ms. Emily, a.k.a. Dana Darling, on her 30th birthday.

The location: Downtown Los Angeles, rooftop of an old art deco building.
The scene: Picture the bright lights of the city skyline blurring across your view like permanent firecrackers, the search lights at the Staples Center flowing wildly and cutting through the night sky. Dinner is set in one of the lofts below, the epicenter of the evening.
The party: You hold a glass of bubbly champagne in one hand as you mingle with elite members of Hollywood, both past and present.
The suspects: They are all there. Starlets of the big screen, members of that boy band, Directors, academy members, handsome socialites, casting agents...
... when suddenly the lights go out, you hear a scuffle and a deadly scream!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Guys and Dolls, let me introduce you to some of our key players during the night that the Fallen Angel movie plot gruesomely came true!

DREAM a little dream.....

I want my life to be a giant treasure hunt!
Keith Johnson, Buyer-at-large for Anthropologie Stores has the dreamiest job I've ever come across. Lucky for me, the Sundance Channel has just created a new original series called, Man Shops Globe. We get to follow Johnson across the world and back, visiting flea markets, garage sales, small villages, one of a kind shops and unique artists in search of beautiful and rare objects! His journeys take him far and wide across this big earth, as I watch the previews via the website, I'm astounded by the history and artistry in each clip. How I would adore traveling on such an excursion!

Hollywood if she could.....

Wild Wednesday:
Buckle your seat belts! We went to the Autoclub Speedway's Pepsi 500 at the Tropicana Pool Bar at the Roosevelt Hotel. One of my lovely girlfriends invited us to attend this amazing party with her and I was completely blown away. I thought we were going to just have a few drinks, I was told the dress was casual. I show up behind a Ferrari and to a "blue" (for Pepsi) carpet! Can you say "Hollywooooooooooood!" It's been quite awhile since I made to event like this one and the great thing about LA is that you never know who you are going to run into. Can I just drop a few names here? Dale Earnhardt Jr. (plink), Jeff Gordon (plink), Melissa Joan Hart, Balthazar Getty, Skeet Ulrich, (plink, plink, plink), Audrina Patridge (plink), just to name a few. Although, per usual, what made this party the best was the chance to hang out with some amazing friends at a great venue... and of course, free cocktails always help too. Here are some pics from our night amongst the world of NASCAR.

One last item I have to cover on this subject...
Let me just preface this by saying that I grew up in Los Angeles, I'm a native. I am used to celebrity sightings and have always prided myself on the fact that I don't ask for autographs or pictures, and I try to let people be. I mean, for heaven's sake! I used to work backstage at the Oscar's and the Emmy's. I've run into the likes of Nicole Kidman, Cuba Gooding Jr., Salma Hayek, Will Smith, Sean Connery (plink, plink, plink, plink, PLINK). However..... here I am at the NASCAR owners party, laughing with my friends, and through the crowd comes Mr. Ben Covington from my absolutely favorite TV show EVER, Felicity. Otherwise known as Scott Speedman in the real world. I practically fall over (I'm going to blame that on the wine) and my ladylike capabilities go out the door! I am now a giggly little school girl, in full blush and fiddling with my skirt. Where is my charm and grace? Gone. Where is my ability to speak without stuttering? Gone. My boyfriend practically pushes me into Scott's lap and proceeds to embarrass me to no end. Fully enjoying every minute of my obviously uncomfortable and awkward girlish crush.

I didn't get to properly say goodbye nor was I able to put together a decent conversation, so I would like to say to you Mr. Speedman;
"Thank you so much for taking the time to humor a girl lost in a world from years ago. I truly appreciate your ease and humor in the situation. The show Felicity got me through some tough times in my college years when it originally aired. It is the most beautifully shot TV show I have ever watched. Felicity is still the DVD I reach for on difficult days.
P.S. I adore your boyish smile. For once in my life, I can actually say that I am a true fan. As much as I can't believe it, I'm a fan that will actually get up and ask for a photo and invade your life for a moment. Thanks again."
The music in this series was also amazing. you can find a few examples from composer Danny Pelfrey HERE. Also, If you have never seen the show, here are a few clips from Felicity.
Enjoy!

I Love you LA. Goodnight.
